Tips/Tricks/FAQ

  1. We use FREE Mobile for SIM cards.  20 Euro/month plus 10 Euro for the SIM card.  Easiest to buy in Toulouse.  Good customer service in the shops.  However not so good English customer service via phone.  Need to cancel a month beforehand.   Don’t recommend ORANGE – more expensive and even worse customer service.
  • Markets/Supermarkets.  Markets are great fun to go to.  However we found the supermarkets were often cheaper and better for produce.  All the big supermarkets are fabulous although we especially like L’eclerc – there is a big one between Castelsarrasin and Moissac which we always stock up from before heading off.  Use the little round plastic discs to disengage a supermarket trolley.
  • Marche Nocturnes or Marche gourmands are night markets where all the villagers come together for food and music.  Great to go to.  Best one was Tuesday nights in Damazan.
  • The plane trees on the banks of the canal are beautiful and great for shade however they produce a brown substance which discolours all the boats. It is almost impossible to remove but the good news is that it disappears over time.
  • Most ports cost around 10 – 20 Euro/night which includes power and water.  Some ports charge for power/water by the use of jetons (tokens) which are different in different ports.  Sometimes it’s 2 Euro for 4 hours power, sometimes for 8 hours power.  Two free ports are Vianne (on the Baise) and Pommevic on the Garonne.
